How to create or save favicon or icons using Photoshop?

Favicon is a small image that is used on websites and are displayed in browser tabs. In this video, we discuss how to create Favicon or icon files using Photoshop. Icons by default have .ICO file extension. By default, Photoshop does not allow creation of icons. To create or save image as icon, we will be using a plug-in in Photoshop.

Watch this short video tutorial to learn how to install the plug-in in Photoshop and how to create or save image as icons.

Download the ICO Photoshop Plug-in from http://www.telegraphics.com.au/sw/product/ICOFormat

Installing the plug-in on Windows:
  • Close Photoshop if running
  • Copy the downloaded "ICOFormat64.8bi" (64 bit) or "ICOFormat.8bi" (32 bit) and paste it in -

For 32 Bit Windows:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS5.1\Plug-ins\File Formats\ICOFormat.8bi

For 64 Bit Windows:
C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS5.1 (64 Bit)\Plug-ins\File Formats\ICOFormat64.8bi

Testing:
  • Start Photoshop
  • Create a new file or import an image
  • Resize to 64x64 pixels
  • After the necessary editing, click FILE > SAVE AS
  • You should be able to see ICO as a file format in the save as dialog
UPDATE:

In some later versions of Adobe Photoshop, you may not find the folder "File Formats" under C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS6 (64 Bit)\Plug-ins\. In that case:
  • Close Adobe Photoshop if it is already open
  • Create a new folder yourself at "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS6 (64 Bit)\Plug-ins" and rename it to "File Formats".
  • Then paste the  "ICOFormat64.8bi" inside the folder  ""C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS6 (64 Bit)\Plug-ins\File Formats".
For 32 Bit Windows:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS5.1\Plug-ins\File Formats\ICOFormat.8bi

For 64 Bit Windows:
C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS5.1 (64 Bit)\Plug-ins\File Formats\ICOFormat64.8bi

  • Open Photoshop and create a new file of 64x64 pixels
  • Click File > Save As
  • You should be able to see ICO file format in the Save As dialog
Note: Make sure that the image you are editing is not more than 256px * 256px, otherwise, you may not be able to see the ICO file format option in the file format dropdown.
